The spot Koty had scoped out was perfect. A small clearing within the woods, far enough off the main road that it took half an hour to find it. Their hiking packs held everything the four teenagers needed, so there was little reason to gripe about the distance. The two tents were set up – one for the boys, and one for the girls – and chores established.  They had a week for their trip, and all knew how important it was to keep things orderly.

It was on the second night that everything fell apart.

Reg read about the death in the paper—the official story was fairly bland, though laced with thrilling hints that one of the other teenagers might be to blame for the youth’s death.  It was, however, no more than any other death in the papers, and Reg had a pile of files on his desk three weeks thick.  He went about his business, the matter of the teens in the woods all but forgotten.

“I am required by law to furnish you with my insurance information.”  Reg said with a scowl.  ”It’s on the paper I gave you.”  He folded his arms and leaned back against the car, glaring at a driver as he edged around the stopped vehicle.

Koty held the paper up, and saw the information scrawled across. “Well would you look at that.” She stuffed it in her jeans’ pocket, hoping she would remember it before tossing the clothes in the wash. Just as she opened her mouth to say something else, flashing red and blue lights caught her eye. With a sigh she slumped as much as she could without moving from her spot, and glared at the approaching ambulance. “Welp, guess this is it then. I’ll be out of your hair shortly, Sunshine.”

As the ambulance came to a halt next to the two, Koty glanced back Adofo. “By the way, my name is Koty Jenner. Feel free to forget it by the end of the day.”

"Don’t worry," Reg said with a chilly sort of smile.  "I will."  He pulled out his badge and ID again as a police officer and two paramedics hurried up.  The latter went to Koty, and Reg began giving a statement to the former.

“I like respect for one’s elders,” he said sourly, accepting the piece of paper. “Another—what, you do this often?”

“At least I’m not calling you ‘old man’ right? Honest, this IS me being respectful. I could be a lot worse.” She was absently trying to brush road grit from her scrapes when his other question registered. “Huh? Oh, yeah. Kinda. Not get hit by cars, no, but I was in the hospital last month for a concussion. Never anything real serious - I swear there’s nothing wrong with me now, I’ll just be sore tomorrow.” After a moment’s thought, Koty ventured a question. “Um… Do you mind if I get your number too? In case my mom wants to talk to you? I doubt she will, but just in case, you know.”

"I am required by law to furnish you with my insurance information."  Reg said with a scowl.  "It’s on the paper I gave you."  He folded his arms and leaned back against the car, glaring at a driver as he edged around the stopped vehicle.

So I got to meet an agent. I could call him a secret agent, since he didn’t want to tell me who he’s with. I think this picture accurately portrays him.

Reg would never see this IC, BUT OH MY GOSH

(CAN YOU SEE WHY I SAID IT WAS A HORRIBLE IDEA AND WHY I WAS SO EXCITED ABOUT IT?!)

NO SHHHH IT IS PERFECT AND THE BEST THING EVER.  RASK JUST LAUGHED HERSELF SICK

Reg stared at her, his face a study in un-amusement.

“None of your business, yes, and also none of your business.” he said stonily—and mentally hurried the ambulance along.

Koty laughed quietly and drew her knees to her chest.

“Fine then, Dreadlocks, you can keep your secrets. I’ll stop pestering you.” A thought seemed to occur to her, and she reached into her pockets, fishing around for who-knows-what. She clearly didn’t find it, because she completely turned the pockets inside-out, revealing their empty state.

“Uh, hey. Do you have a piece of paper? I’m going to give you my mom’s number, in case you do decide your car needs fixed or something… This was my fault, after all.”

“Agent Adofo,” Reg said flatly—and then squinted at her before digging a piece of paper out of his pocket and thrusting it at her.

“What, don’t like nicknames?” But Koty had already stopped paying attention, and took the paper from Adofo, scribbling on it with the one thing that came from her pocket - a black Sharpie. She held it out again, knowing full and well the man had no intent of using the number, even if the damage had been worse.

She turned her head to see the ambulance speeding up the street in their direction and sighed in defeat. “And now for another wasted afternoon in the hospital…”

"I like respect for one’s elders," he said sourly, accepting the piece of paper. "Another—what, you do this often?"

Reg passed a hand over his face with a sigh—he could hear sirens in the distance, thank goodness.  He pulled his ID out of his pocket and flipped it open, scowl still on his face.  ”Agent Adofo,” he said shortly, and flipped it closed again.

If only Adofo could have known the trouble he had gotten himself into by saying “Agent”. He had Koty’s complete and undivided attention, the girl not even noticing the approaching sirens. The grin on her face grew, and her eyes were alight with interest.

“Agent, huh? Who are you with? CIA? FBI? MIB? Do you carry a gun? Have you ever killed anyone?” She fired off all the questions in one breath, and eagerly leaned forward in anticipation.

Reg stared at her, his face a study in un-amusement.

“You can sit back down,” Reg said through his teeth, “and not move until the ambulance arrives.  The last thing I need is a lawsuit from enraged parents.”

Koty had to snort at that. “Pfft. Lawsuit? Enraged parents? My mom’ll know it’s my fault the moment the hospital tries to get ahold of her again. She knows me well enough.” Nonetheless, Koty sat back on the ground and crossed her legs, trying and failing to look the perfect picture of innocence and complacency.

“Sooooo… What’s your name?” For an inexplicable reason, Koty was grinning now. Given that she had just been hit by a car, she felt completely relaxed, and was a little too amused at Adofo’s stress.

Reg passed a hand over his face with a sigh—he could hear sirens in the distance, thank goodness.  He pulled his ID out of his pocket and flipped it open, scowl still on his face.  ”Agent Adofo,” he said shortly, and flipped it closed again.

“It’s in better shape than your bike,” Reg said tartly, eyeing a long scratch on his bumper.

Koty was almost afraid to look. When she spotted her bike, her only mode of transportation, she could do nothing but wince at the damage. The peculiar angle the front half had contorted into could barely be walked home, let alone ridden.

“Huh… Looks like I know what birthday present I’ll be asking for this year.” And it’s a good thing I didn’t buy that new bike seat…

Koty glanced back at Adofo, trying to gauge how to handle the situation. It was time for some literal damage control. She carefully got to her feet, making a half-hearted attempt to dust herself off with the backs of her hands.

“Listen, I’m really sorry. Is there anything I can do? Can I pay you back somehow?”

"You can sit back down," Reg said through his teeth, "and not move until the ambulance arrives.  The last thing I need is a lawsuit from enraged parents."
